Note: Manila, the capital of the Philippines was a Spanish colony from the 16^th to the 19^th century.  The term «Mantón de Manila» describes the shawl’s origin, on other words, Manila where it was first made of pure silk in a design whose elements where distinctly Far East Asian in influence.  It was all embroidered by hand.
